All signs indicate that Leni is pregnant. We don’t do an ultrasound this time for various reasons. Even with an ultrasound you can’t be 100 percent sure because the female can still resorb the embryos. Today is a very emotional day for me. On one hand I am happy that 8 dogs out of my first litter can celebrate their 9th birthday today. On the other hand I am very sad that my beloved girl Alma cannot celebrate this day. I found great homes for all puppies from my Loheland litter now. This is a very international litter, my babies moved to 5 different countries: Sweden, Germany, Austria, Latvia and Estonia. If everything goes well 5 of them might be used for breeding later on, which is so important for the genetic diversity of the breed, whose population has been drastically shrinking in numbers for many years already. And even though there are fewer and fewer litters of this wonderful breed being born I feel like it is getting harder and harder to find good homes for them, which makes breeding great danes even more difficult as it already is. Everybody who truly loves this breed should be aware of how important it is to support responsible breeders!<\/h5>

Today my boy GaiAlmas Hugin and his sister Munin turn 2 years old. Hugin did his health tests already and passed the mental test of the Swedish Kennel Club with good results. I only showed him twice in the youngster class, once in Sweden where he got the Honor Price and once at the Finnish Specialty where he became best male puppy. I think he is still too young to be a stud dog, but if someone with an older and suitable, of course health tested, female is interested I might approve him for one litter. Now I can finally present the collages of my Loheland litter, which is named after the famous great dane kennel in Germany of the 1920ies and 1930ies. I wrote a book about this exciting and important part of great dane history last year and of course I had to honor the work of the breeder Hedwig von Rohden with my first fawn\/brindle litter. The ones who have read my book know what I am talking about. The ones who don’t know and are interested can still order it (my book<\/mark><\/a><\/em>)

I am very happy with the puppies, they are all healthy without major faults and have a lovely temperament. Five puppies already found fantastic homes, but Ferguni, Gazelle, Ischulan, Rungnir and Wasdan are still searching for their new familes. The last weeks were quite tough with Cookie having an infection on her C-Section wound, so I had to raise the puppies alone with the bottle after one week with their mother. Then Cookie needed another operation due to a bleeding on her uterus trunk and then we lost a little brindle girl due to heavy diarrhea. Breeding great danes can be incredibly painful\u2026

Now both mother and the 10 puppies that are left are doing fine. They had their first foto shooting and they got their names. Of course my first fawn\/brindle litter has to be named after the most famous Loheland danes. The ones who have read my book<\/mark><\/a><\/em> about this famous German kennel from the 1920ies\/1930ies will understand.

After a very long night and a very long day Cookie gave birth to 12 puppies today. The first 8 came naturally but the 9th got stuck and was dead so we had to do a C-section. Cookie was anyway supposed to be neutered after this litter and this was also done yesterday so she will not need another operation that’s good. She is doing really well right now and is a great mother.

Now we have 2 brindle males and 4 brindle females 1 fawn male and 4 fawn females.<\/h5>

This year starts with very sad news. I had to say goodbye to my beloved Alma yesterday. Cancer has eaten up her lungs and belly. She was born into my hands and she died in my hands. Now she doesn’t have to suffer anymore.

Alma was my once in a lifetime dog, my soulmate. I don’t know if I will ever be able to love a dog again as much as I loved her. She was a certified therapy dog, but she was most of all my own therapy dog. We went through so many ups and downs together and I learned so much from her. Most of all:
Enjoy every moment, Never give up, Love forever!

I am grateful for all the intense memories with her, and that I have her wonderful daughters and grandchildren. They are her legacy and I will keep it up. The eternal cycle of death and life has to go on.

Alma, you are deeply missed. You will forever stay in our hearts.
I am looking forward to see you again when it’s my turn and you will greet me with your wagging tail.<\/h5>

Today my little big boy GaiAlmas Hugin turns 6 months old. Actually I didn’t plan to keep him – and there were many who wanted him – but in the end destiny decided that he stays with us and it feels right. Well, I also decided, because I couldn’t sell him in the end, he has just been with us for too long. And he is such a nice boy, both inside and outside. He has a very stable temperament and loves everyone – especially children (got no clue where this comes from, not from me for sure \"\ud83d\ude1c\" ) Let’s see what his future brings. He develops nicely and maybe one day he can pass his rare genes to future generations.<\/h5>
